The fire broke out at the substation at a time when PG&E’s systems were already under pressure due to a series of powerful storms sweeping through the region. The combination of extreme weather and unexpected equipment failures created a complicated situation that took utility crews several days to unravel.
According to PG&E spokespeople, the fire triggered an automatic shutdown of the affected circuits to prevent further damage or safety hazards. That shutdown, while necessary, led to widespread outages in surrounding communities. The recent wave of storms battered the Bay Area with heavy rains, strong winds, and even flooding in certain parts. Emergency services were stretched thin as they responded to downed trees, blocked roads, and minor landslides. At the peak of the outages, thousands of homes across several counties were left without power.
Residents in hard-hit areas described hearing loud booms before the blackout, a possible indication of electrical equipment failing under pressure from wind or falling debris.
